A Quiet Christmas Day
It’s Boxing Day and I have not done an awful lot today to be honest.
I did empty the dishwasher and then fill it again with the last of the dishes from Christmas Day. I had put in the pots and pans for the first load yesterday, then I had decided to leave the rest until this morning. Nothing like a fabulous Christmas Dinner to have you sitting in your chair resting for the remainder of the day.
Since then I have had many cups of tea and wandered in and out of the kitchen on a regular basis. I even have a list in my head of what I want to get done. There are the extra broccoli heads that I want to freeze with some white sauce. The leftover carrots and parsnips that need roasting. The turkey is all gone thankfully. Between ourselves and the animals who all got treats, the turkey crown for 2-4 people did not last long.
This Christmas was a bit different to our previous ones. This year we only had to look after ourselves and an extra two dogs. We had a restful morning with the usual bacon roll for breakfast, then sat quietly chatting with Christmas music placing in the background.
Mid afternoon I went to visit mum in the care home. She was in good spirits which was a blessing. I had taken her some presents and we sat and chatted for about half an hour. It was nice to have such a positive visit.
Kathleen decided she was going to make Christmas dinner by herself this year. I have to say she did a fantastic job. We even had home made roast potatoes which were lush. There was prawn cocktail to start then a full Christmas dinner which neither of us could finish. I had the rest of mine for lunch today.
Thankfully we had not decided on a dessert, so we were able to just relax after eating which was a blessing in itself.
We had planned to watch the Dr Who Christmas Special, which we then found out did not exist. So we did the next best thing and watched old episodes instead. It was a great way to spend the evening remembering episodes and noticing small things we hadn’t picked up previously.
This was the first Christmas Kathleen and I have had on our own, which seems strange considering how old we are. Previously we had spent it either with my parents or with our respective partners. Now we are both single and living together again, it was lovely to be able to spend the day relaxing and enjoying our favourite things.
Is it just me or does anyone else feel tired after having a relaxing day? I have done very little the last couple of days and I feel exhausted. Maybe it is just my body catching up with itself. It had better hurry up because I have a load of things I need to get done.
I now have yet another cup of tea. When I went to the kitchen I saw all the vegetables that I should be preparing. Then I remembered that I bought two of the large 600ml tubs of cream. So far only a small bit had been used from one of them for Kathleen’s cheese sauce (which was pretty epic I have to say). So I decided that I would make ice cream to use up the rest of the first tub. It’s the easiest thing ever, large tub of cream whipped, add one tin of condensed milk and flavouring, whip them all together and put into tubs. I now have 6 small tubs of vanilla ice cream freezing which will be edible by tomorrow.
The great thing about that recipe is that it is a pretty heavy ice cream so normally it takes us 2-3 attempts to finish a tub.
I hope everyone has had the best Christmas they could and that you are all managing to relax a bit after the lead up to the day. Tea is calling so I shall go sit back and enjoy that and I will catch you later.
