Starting Out Shelf Stable Shopping List

I have added a “Starting Out Shopping List” to the downloads section of the website.  We have talked often about what we have in the cupboards on a regular basis so I thought this may be useful.  It is what I think is pretty much the minimum for someone to move into a property and be able to sit and relax.

There are many reasons why a starting out shopping list may be useful.  A student moving into halls could definitely use a starter pack.  As could a family member moving into a new home.  For young people leaving care and older people downsizing, having the basics can make a huge difference.

Although I haven’t moved very often myself, I do distinctly remember my student days. The realisation that washing up liquid was a necessity was an eye opener. That tin foil on the bottom of the oven was a game changer for the effort required to clean the oven.  Most importantly I know the relief that having the basics to hand gives me even now.

It has been scientifically proven that moving home is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a person.  With this in mind, anything that can make it easier has to be a bonus.

How many of us have moved into a new home, rushing about on moving day and the days afterwards. The last thing we want to think about is grocery shopping? Sometimes that means a takeaway but for a lot of people, the budget is just not there.  Having these basics means you know that for the first few days you can at least feed yourself without having to go to the store first.

The non food items mean that you are able to settle in and carry on from day one.  Nothing worse than moving home and finding you have no toilet roll or washing up liquid.  No one wants to have to do grocery shopping after lugging furniture around.

Even if these items are not required in the first few days, the fact that they are shelf stable means that there is an instant backup in case of emergencies.  By emergencies I am thinking of running out of cash before you thought you would. We all know how easily that can happen to all of us.

The list that I have prepared is a very basic, budget friendly list of items to give someone a basic back up.  Something that may be provided by family / friends / organisations etc.  Certainly something that could be bought by someone over time prior to it being required without breaking the bank.

I will be adding a more comprehensive list of items for the purpose of being prepared at a later date.

To download the list, just go to the downloads page here.

I have soent the morning doing an inventory of my non-food supplies. I have a small, lined notebook that fits in my purse that I will keep on hand at all times. I’ve listed things by category – hygeiene, teeth, hair, paper products etc. Listed each item separately and then put a check mark for each back up amount that I have (ie. 3 shampoos, 13 deodorants, 7 toothpastes etc.) – it actually didin’t take that long and it also allowed me to consolidate and clean things up a bit.

I will start on the food this week.

I need to watch my money much more carefully over this next year so don’t want to be buying things that I don’t need as opposed to items I do need.
