What I Have Stopped Buying In My 50s
I have noticed over the last few years that there are some things I have stopped buying. Some of them weren’t things that I bought particularly often so don’t really miss having them. Others I am a little bit sad about but know it had to happen.
One of my sad items is high heels. Not so much shoes but definitely boots, I used to love high heeled boots. However, it has become apparent that I struggle to stay upright now due to my ankles not being as reliable as they once were. So it is better to wear the sensible version nowadays.
Something I am not particularly bothered about is make up. I was never someone who wore a lot of make up but I did normally have some bits just in case I wanted to look a bit different. Now, I don’t even have those. They were used so rarely it seemed a bit pointless to replace them when they aged out.
Alongside the make up is the hairdresser. I did the perms in the 80s and battled with curling tools for many years. Now I have accepted that my hair is straight and that is just how it is. Not much point in going to the hairdresser for them to cut a couple of inches off. Much more cost effective to do that myself.
I am all for being comfortable nowadays and to this end, I stopped wearing the underwired bra. Yes, they can accentuate your figure but I really don’t care about that at this moment in time. I would much rather be comfortable and not have the risk of being stabbed by a piece of metal that has escaped.
I have saved myself a lot of time in recent years by stopping buying clothes that need ironed. Most of my clothes now don’t require ironing and I can’t see that changing any time soon. The memories of Sunday afternoons being taken up by ironing so many shirts are now all that is left of my ironing abilities.
Sadly, I have also stopped purchasing magazine subscriptions and subscription boxes. Whilst I loved waiting for them to arrive by post, the contents were becoming more and more underwhelming. So many pages of adverts in the magazines and so many little bits of paper or items I would never use in the boxes. I decided it was better to keep my money and use it for treats I would fully enjoy.
I am sure there are many more things I have stopped buying and I will let you know what they when I remember them. Until then, let me know in the comments what you have stopped buying over the years.
