Taking Steps To Reduce My Food Waste

Over recent months I have noticed that I have often lost fresh veggies because I have not used them in my meals or batch cooking. They then sit there and start to go past the stage of no return and need to be thrown out.

For many people this has been a normal occurrence as has been reported in many articles about the amount of food waste throughout the world.
In an effort to reduce my food waste I have tried to use and/or save more this weekend.

If you saw my video from last weekend about my online shopping, you will know that I got a lot of bits for my lunches for work.
I did not however, have a very good handle on portion control. You may notice on that video that I bought 12 mini pork pies and a pack of 6 very large tomatoes and ham. How I thought I was going to use them up in one week, I do not know. Then there was the amount of fresh vegetables I bought. A mixed bag of peppers, whole bag of carrots, whole pack of mushrooms etc.
This morning I took care of the fresh veggies but the other things were sitting in the fridge. As I was going to be staying at Patrick’s tonight, most of this would be wasted under normal circumstances. This week however, I decided to head to Patrick’s a bit earlier and take lunch with me.
Once I got there I made us a bit of a picnic with sandwiches and a small buffet style plate to share. A simple yet effective way to use food that previously would have been left in the fridge.
What I find strange is how long it has taken me to realise that this is an easy and enjoyable way to stop wasting the food.
For so long we have not particularly used what is in the fridge already, instead preparing full meals. It certainly does no harm for a meal to be made from what we ued to call “picky bits”. Using up whatever you have lying about whether that be throwing some vegetables in the air fryer to roast or making a bunch of sandwiches or buffet plates.
Happily this weekend we have managed to preserve or use pretty much everything that needed it. Here’s hoping to managing to do that on a regular basis.
